What is Storm Mode?

A calm walkthrough of Weather the Storm's urge-management primitive — what it does, when to use it, and why it's one tap from anywhere.

There's a moment in any real attempt at change — quitting nicotine, easing off alcohol, cutting back on late-night scrolling — where the urge arrives faster than your best intentions can respond to it. That moment is what Storm Mode is for.

The one-tap idea

Storm Mode is a single, always-visible entry point in Weather the Storm. From anywhere in the app — before you've even finished onboarding, before you've configured anything — you can tap it and be somewhere useful within a second.

That's the whole design constraint: one tap, from anywhere, always available.

What happens after the tap

You see a small menu of options. In the current build:

  • Calm my mind. A short breathing exercise. About sixty seconds.
  • Talk with Ava. Ava is an AI companion, never a person. She won't lecture. She'll ask one question and go from there.
  • Contact my Circle. If you've added trusted people, this taps them, not you. You don't have to compose a message.

Everything is optional. Nothing is a test. If you tap Storm Mode and then close the app, that's a valid outcome — you got through the moment.

Why it exists

Willpower is a poor foundation for change. It works well when you're rested, fed, safe, and in a familiar environment. It works badly at 9 PM when a familiar cue shows up on schedule.

The urge-management literature is pretty consistent about one thing: short interventions in the first few minutes matter more than long ones later. A minute of breathing at the moment the urge peaks is worth more than a journal entry about it the next day. Storm Mode makes that first minute frictionless.

What it deliberately isn't

  • It isn't a report. There's no "how did that go?" survey after you close it. If you want to reflect later, you can. If not, nothing bugs you.
  • It isn't a streak-preserver. Whether you had a good or hard moment, tapping Storm Mode is not a promise about the rest of your day. It's just help for right now.
  • It isn't an ad for premium features. Storm Mode works on the free tier, forever.

When to use it

Anytime. The bar is low on purpose.

The moment a craving shows up. The moment a difficult feeling shows up. The moment you notice yourself opening the app that used to be the trigger. Any of those. All of them. None of them, if you don't need it.

Nobody should have to weather the storm alone. That's the whole idea.
